The Ebb of Parenthood from a Biological Perspective

Parenthood itself is not a fact of nature but a cultural deed. Though sexual intercourse, from which pregnancy could result, is a source of civil responsibility, parenthood as such stems only from a spontaneous decision. Both historical evidence and analysis of present trends point out that parenthood consists in service and love rather than in procreation. The latest changes undergone by the family, no more a unit of economic, social and religious character, but basically a group of affection and companionship, have contributed considerably to the ebb of parenthood seen from a biological point of view. On account of its elective contents, adoption is the forerunner of parenthood as it will be tomorrow—essentially rooted in the idea of freedom.
